The Substance

2024 · Directed by Coralie Fargeat

Body horror with all the subtlety of a fire alarm. We mean that as the highest compliment.

Some films whisper. This one grabs your collar. The Substance has exactly one idea about how the world treats women as they age, and it repeats that idea at maximum volume until it becomes something closer to an experience than an argument.

That sounds like a criticism. It is not. The bluntness is the point. Fargeat shoots everything in close, greasy, wide-angle detail, and the film gets steadily louder and redder until the final act, which we are not going to describe. You will know.

Demi Moore is doing something genuinely brave here, and the best scene in the film is also the quietest: a woman getting ready to go out, then not going out. No effects, no gore, no music. It is the bit that stays with you.

It is too much. It is supposed to be too much. If you are the sort of person who says a film went too far, this one went considerably further than that, on purpose, while looking directly at you.

Eat before you watch. Not during.

Best bit

Demi Moore in front of a mirror, doing nothing, ruining you completely.

Least best bit

Subtlety was not invited. If you need nuance, this is not the address.

Final score

Open to appeal. Bring evidence.

Sinners

2025 · Ryan Coogler

Coogler took a genre mashup that had no business holding together and turned it into the most confident swing anyone has taken in years. We have not stopped thinking about the juke joint sequence.

One Battle After Another

2025 · Paul Thomas Anderson

Two and a half hours of paranoid, funny, gorgeously shot chaos with a car sequence that had an entire cinema leaning sideways in their seats. Nobody expected this to be the fun one.

2025 · Zach Cregger

Cregger builds this like a set of nesting dolls and every layer is worse than the last. It is very funny right up until the exact moment it stops being funny, which is the trick he has now pulled twice.
